Colts Australia are the champions of the BABA Senior Womens Competition after defeating the Dunsborough Lightning by 4 points in last night Grand Final.
In a game that was always destined to be close it was clear early on scoring would be difficult as both teams’ defensive units held firm to keep the score to 2 points a-piece after the first 5 minutes. The next 10 minute saw the Lightning strike with Lisa Millman and Dragana Kovijanic both scoring and sending the Dunsborough side out to 4-point lead. However, this was short lived as Colts rallied and when Ellie Drown and Rennie Meadmore score just before the half it was anyone’s game with the score locked together at 10-10 at half time.
The second half started in a similar way to the first with both sides’ fighting for the early ascendency. It was Colts who made the most of their opportunities however with Shannon Pross, Daisy de Morton and Ellie Drown hitting the scoreboard it gave the side in green a 6-point lead. Dunsborough weren’t finished with just yet though with Felicity Jones making both free throws to get the margin back to four with 7 minutes to play. Colts continued to apply pressure and when de Morton and Drown both scored to take it out to a game high 8-point lead all hope for the Lightning appeared lost. Clearly no one had told the Lightning this as Lara Lewis stepped up with a quick 4 points herself the margin was back to 3 with only 2 minutes to play!
However, Colts through Brady Van Wyk put the final nail in the coffin when she sunk one from the line to secure the 2023/24 BABA Senior Womens Championship for Colts Australia.
